Reflections on Freedom

Statement

Date: Oct. 16, 2014

Despite recent attempts to make health coverage more comprehensive, the United States healthcare system is still part of a market-driven industry in which corporate power and profit are prioritized above the needs and human rights of patients.

Where I stand: Currently, corporations have an inordinate amount of control over personal and private medical decision-making. Freedom cannot exist in a country where millions of people are imprisoned by illness and disability while corporations stand between patients and the care they need. Single-payer national health insurance is the best way to make sure all Americans have access to comprehensive medical care--including reproductive healthcare; prescription drugs; mental healthcare; hospice; dental services; and long term care.
